Former Alt-Weekly Columnist Drops Out of Mayoral Racenew

Joe Lance, who wrote the "Civic Forum" political column for Chattanooga's The Pulse until early 2008, entered that Tennessee city's 2009 mayoral race back in November, but has since withdrawn and endorsed former Parks & Recreation director Rob Healy. Election officials tell the Chattanoogan that Lance's name will remain on the ballot because they didn't know he was giving up his run.

Former Alt-Weekly Columnist Running for Chattanooga, Tenn., Mayornew

Joe Lance, who wrote the "Civic Forum" political column for Chattanooga's The Pulse until earlier this year, has entered the Tennessee city's 2009 mayoral race. "I have decided that the best way to encourage my fellow citizens to get involved in our local government is by asking them to allow me the honor of serving them as our next mayor," Lance says.

The Pulse is Sold to Local Media Groupnew

The Chattanooga, Tenn., alt-weekly has been purchased by Brewer Media Group, which owns a handful of local radio stations and websites. "Brewer Media Group is a fantastic match for The Pulse," publisher Zack Cooper says. "We are confident that together we will continue to serve up the kind of content our readers expect. At the same time, Brewer's multi-media approach offers a powerful and compelling proposition for advertisers." Cooper, who was co-owner of the paper with editor Michael Kull, will remain publisher under Brewer.

The Pulse's Founding Editor Steps Downnew

"This week's issue marks my last as editor," Bill Colrus writes in a farewell column. He's leaving the Chattanooga alt-weekly "for a new and exciting opportunity in the world of custom publishing," and will be replaced by current co-publisher Michael Kull. "This paper has been devoted to digging for bits of truth buried in mountains of dishonesty and spin, and I've been glad to man the shovel," writes Colrus, who was hired prior to the paper's launch in 2003. "As I leave, I am confident that The Pulse will continue its mission to give a voice to the voiceless, go deeper on stories when a superficial snapshot is not enough, and strive to tell the stories nobody else will tell."

Chattanooga Pulse Turns Threenew

Alternative newsweeklies "don't usually fare very well in Chattanooga," says Editor Bill Colrus, but his paper seems to be bucking the trend. According to Colrus, The Pulse's improving finances have led to an expanded news section, which brings the alt-weekly closer to its goal to be like the papers "we loved in other cities" -- Nashville Scene, Creative Loafing and the New Haven Advocate. The Pulse applied for AAN membership in 2005 and 2006.
