AAN to Co-Sponsor D.C. Screening of "Shadows of Liberty" Documentary
District of Columbia — On FRIDAY, JUNE 5, at 5:30 PM at the AFL-CIO (815 16th St., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20006) the Shadows of Liberty USA Screening & Media Reform Action Tour will come to town for a special FREE screening presented by the ACLU of the Nation's Capital, the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, DC Jobs with Justice, DC Labor FilmFest, Free Press, the Hip Hop Caucus, the Labor Heritage Foundation, the Media Consortium, MoveOn DC/Montgomery County Council, Progressive Democrats of America, Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press, Veterans for Peace DC, the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, the Washington Peace Center, and WPFW 89.3 FM.

The documentary film Shadows of Liberty reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover-ups and corporate control.

In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics including DANNY GLOVER, JULIAN ASSANGE, DAN RATHER, AMY GOODMAN, DAVID SIMON, NORMAN SOLOMON, BOB BEAR, ROBERTA BASKIN, JOHN MACARTHUR, DANIEL ELLSBERG, JANINE JACKSON, CHRIS HEDGES, ROBERT MCCHESNEY,KRISTINA BORJESSON and JOHN NICHOLS give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone.

Shadows of Liberty is dedicated to the journalists and information freedom fighters, the heroes of our time, who dedicate their lives to our right to freedom of information - the central pillar of a free society. Shadows of Liberty provides a platform for voices that have been silenced and in doing so, attempts to inspire change and accountability. This film champions the idea of an independent media where truth and integrity are the norm, not the exception.

This is a free event with donations greatly appreciated, and after the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring:

Tiffany Shackelford, Executive Director of the Association of Alternative Newmedia;
Martha Allen, Director of the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press; and
Monica Hopkins-Maxwell, Executive Director of the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital
The film is coming to town as part of the 9th Leg of the Shadows of Liberty USA Screening & Media Reform Action Tour. To date there have been 8 Tour Legs, with 91 screenings in 41 states, working with 166 collaborating organizations.
