Alt-weekly publications were well-represented among the winners when the Association of Food Journalists announced the results of its annual food writing contest last week.

Gus Garcia-Roberts (Miami New Times) took first place in the Food Feature category for his piece, "Pork Pirates," which exposed illegal slaughterhouses in Dade County, Fla. Miami New Times writers also picked up awards in the Food News Story and Restaurant Criticism categories.

Hanna Raskin won first place in the Food Column category for her work that appeared in the Mountain Xpress. Raskin is now the food editor at the Dallas Observer.

Rounding out the winners, L.A. Weekly and Village Voice both picked up staff awards in the Food Blog and Food Coverage categories, respectively.
