covering news, culture and
politics for Mississippi's capital
city. The JFP is Mississippi's first
and only AAN publication,
serving a growing metropolitan
area of 450,000, including
30,000+ college students.
Steeped in literature and the
blues, while informed by pop and
hip-hop culture, the JFP reports
the stories that the Gannett daily
misses -- the facts about a controversial mayor, the
progressivism of young Mississippians, African-
American issues,
anti-war
sentiment, environmental issues
and the politics behind high-profile
fights such as
tort reform,
education and criminal justice in
the Magnolia State. Named in
honor of the Mississippi Free
Press, an integrationist paper
started in part by Medgar Evers
during the Civil Rights
Movement, the JFP has the dual
goals of fostering an inclusive
community and offering a fiercely
independent media voice to help
make Jackson the standout
"creative class" town that it has
the potential to be.

17,000. The 2007 Jackson Market Study,
commissioned by The Clarion-
Ledger (local daily) showed the JFP's total readership as 64,332. Media
Audit in 2008 showed adult readership at 54,400.
