Miami New Times' Tim Elfrink Wins Polk Award

Miami New Times managing editor Tim Elfrink has won the George Polk Award for Sports Reporting for his role in uncovering one of the largest drug scandals in Major League Baseball history.

Last year Elfrink revealed that several of baseball's biggest stars were on the client list of the South Florida anti-aging clinic Biogenesis, with records indicating that the clinic had supplied those players with performance-enhancing drugs:

His explosive stories led to the suspension of 13 players, created a sea change in how baseball owners and players approach drug use and explained how Florida Governor Rick Scott’s laissez-faire approach to regulation allowed clinics like Biogenesis to operate with little or no oversight.

Miami New Times joins an elite group of Polk Award-winning publications this year, including The Guardian, The New York Times, PBS, Rolling Stone, and the Washington Post. The awards are given out by Long Island University.

Elfrink's Biogenesis investigation has also earned him a spot as a finalist for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, which comes with a $25,000 prize.
