About AltWeeklies.com
AltWeeklies.com brings readers the best, most insightful, thought-provoking news and features published in the 131 papers that belong to the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Updated throughout the work week, AltWeeklies.com will help readers find the latest news about politics, crime, social issues, the environment, health, sex, food, film, music, art and books -- all with a different perspective from what is generally found on wire-service and daily-newspaper Web sites.
The site also enables alt-weekly editors to find and seek permission to reprint significant stories written by their counterparts in other parts of North America.
The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies was founded in Seattle, Wash., in 1978. It began with 30 newspapers -- among them, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Creative Loafing, Pacific Sun, New Times, Willamette Week and The Chicago Reader. To be accepted for membership, weekly newspapers must demonstrate that they produce a high-quality publication that offers a valuable alternative to the mainstream media in their area. The 130 papers that now make up the association publish in 41 states and the District of Columbia in the United States, and in four Canadian provinces.
The AltWeeklies.com website was created by DesertNet, which has developed websites for many newsweeklies that belong to AAN, as well as the AAN.org website.
Jon Whiten is the site's editor. Click here to email him.
