EVENTS

Please note: Schedule is subject to change. You must wear your AAN badge at all times to ensure admittance to convention events.

Thursday, June 14

7 am to 2 pm
Golf Outing
To participate, send Willamette Week sales rep Andrew Shenker an e-mail and arrange payment in advance, or for the day of the tournament. After you've registered, meet Shenker and Musicfest NW director Trevor Solomon in the Hilton Portland lobby at 7 am for an 8 am tee time at either Eastmoreland or Heron Lakes Golf Course. The estimated cost per person, which includes golf, lunch, refreshments and transportation, is $75.

6:30 to 9 pm
Welcome Reception at the Portland Art Museum
How’s this for swanky? In the middle of downtown Portland, in the heart of its cultural district, resides one of the Northwest's most prized possessions: The Portland Art Museum. For this year’s opening-night reception, AAN-goers will dine on light hors d’oeuvres and sip on Oregon's finest wines and microbrews in the museum's outdoor sculpture garden, nestled between the newly opened Mark Building, which houses an incredibly cool collection of work by the late art critic Clement Greenberg, and the Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, featuring the just-opened "Rembrandt and the Golden Age of Dutch Art, Treasures from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam."

9 to 10 pm
Special Screening: "Touch Me Someplace I Can Feel"
Following the reception, we will move inside for a special showing of "Touch Me Someplace I Can Feel." This one-hour documentary by Dutch filmmaker Simone de Vries (whose previous work includes "Kinky Friedman: Proud To Be An Asshole from El Paso") is a hilarious and affectionate portrait of John Callahan, the longtime quadraplegic cartoonist for Willamette Week, whose politically incorrect work has generated boycotts, protests and groupies. Callahan will make a rare appearance to answer questions after the screening.

10 pm to 1 am
Dark Horse After Dark at Ace Cleaners
Free music and munchies await you as Milwaukie, Oregon’s own Dark Horse Comics presents a late-night after-hours party at the Ace Cleaners in honor of the AAN convention. DJ Stay in School will spin tunes way into the wee hours as convention-goers meet and greet some of the world’s top comic and film artists, Portland's hoi-polli and other members of the glam glitterati that call this hamlet home, friggin' sweet home. Dark shades optional.

Friday, June 15

7 to 8 am
Waterfront Run
A river runs through it. And so can you. Join Willamette Week's Kyle Owens on a five-mile run (at a nine-minute per mile pace) through downtown Portland. Interested runners should plan to meet in the lobby of the Hilton Portland at 7 am.

8:30 to 10:30 am
Nature Hike: Wild in the City
Join naturalist Stephen Hatfield for a nature hike through Portland's Forest Park. With 5000 acres of forest and 70 miles of trails, the park offers urbanites a slice of Oregon's vaunted natural beauty just minutes from downtown. The hike through Balch canyon will give you a glimpse of our evergreen and deciduous forests, a perennial trout stream, opportunities for other wildlife viewing as well as commentary on the park's natural and human history. Additional fee: TBA. Please note: The hike may not conclude until after regularly scheduled programming has already begun.

1 to 3 pm
AltWeekly Awards Luncheon
After lunch is served, the winners of the annual awards contest will be announced. During the presentation, columnist and commentator Jim Hightower will offer a tribute to the late Molly Ivins. The affair will emceed by Patricia Calhoun, Westword and Tim Redmond, San Francisco Bay Guardian.

6:30 to 8:30 pm
Rooftop Reception at Wieden + Kennedy
Conventioneers will take the streetcar to the world headquarters of Wieden + Kennedy, one of the world's top ad agencies (e.g., Nike, Starbucks, Coca-Cola), for a night of cocktails and old Motown music. Enjoy views of the booming Pearl District, great music, food and drinks, and excellent company.

8 pm to ?
Portland Mercury Party
Come meet the Mercury staff, have a drink, eat some food, dance to one of the city's best DJs, and watch some of Portland's Infamous Dog Fighting! That's right, the much beloved Portland institution of vicious canines dueling to the death will be on vivid display, and YOU can have a ringside seat!  Bring your wallet and gambling instincts to the Ace Hotel.

8:30 pm to 1 am
BarFly's Mystery Strip Bar Bus Tour
Shave those palms and get ready for a titillating night of 100-percent pure Portland voyeurism. Take a tour of Portland's infamous all-nude revues. Your hostess will be Jen Lane, professional bon vivante and Portland party queen. The BarFly Bus is a great way to get to know Portland, make new drinking buddies, and get over all those traumatic childhood school bus memories at the same time (yes, the BarFly Bus is a big, yellow, school bus!). You'll have a blast on the Bus. Tour begins following the Wieden + Kennedy party. To register, simply pay the $15 cover (cash or check) at the AAN registration desk in the Hilton.

Saturday, June 16

8:15 to 9:30 am
Farmers Market Tour
Willamette Week Arts & Culture Editor Kelly Clarke will lead a morning stroll through Portland's bustling, delicious Farmers Market (portlandfarmersmarket.org), which is located just blocks from the Hilton on the Portland State University campus. During this hour-long walking tour, you'll graze on gratis samples from some of Oregon's finest farmers, cheesemakers, bread bakers and sweets makers along the way. It's a foodie's wet dream. And it's free! To join the early-morning fun, meet in the Hilton lobby at 8:15 am.

1 to 3 pm
First Amendment Luncheon
With guest David C. Iglesias, former U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico. Iglesias will be interviewed by Julia Goldberg, editor of the Santa Fe Reporter.

6 to 9pm
Dinner in the Sky
After a quick streetcar ride, conventioneers will climb aboard an AAN-private cabin on the new Portland Aerial Tram for the three-minute, 500-foot ascent to Oregon Health & Science University's Kohler Pavilion. Up top, you'll take in spectacular views of downtown Portland, the Willamette River and Mt. Hood. A salmon dinner and dessert follows at OHSU's Atrium.

9 pm to ?
Pre1 Party: Kick Out The Jams
After your Dinner in the Sky, hop back on the streetcar for a ride back downtown to the Tugboat Brewing Company, where you can take turns onstage rocking out with fellow AAN members. Pre1 Software has reserved this funky little club and will supply all the instruments. Just bring your hot licks or have a microbrew and watch your friends. Take the streetcar a few blocks past the hotel stop to SW 10th & Stark --  it's just a short walk from there.

9 pm to ?
Cocktails Anyone?
Just across the street from the Tugboat, the Saucebox (214 SW Broadway) will be offering a special AAN cocktail in honor of our collective badness. Bottoms up.
