Time for some real talk: Your readers are getting older and grayer everyday. Who are the alternative news consumers of tomorrow? The same old formula isn't going to win them over. The first step towards finding your future readers is to take an honest look in the mirror and acknowledge what's really holding you back ... then blow it up.

Waiting for an RFP to land in your inbox, then scrambling for 24 hours to put together a haphazard proposal that doesn’t get accepted? We cannot do business like this any longer.

Brands are looking for something different, and if you and your network are just offering up banner ads, you WILL fail. It is time to get proactive. Creativity is as important as reach, and agencies are looking for multiplatform campaigns that utilize web, print, mobile, branded content and street teams to deliver a compelling package to the agencies.

In this workshop, we'll split up into teams, and each will create a proposal to deliver to a specific advertising category: Telecom, Insurance, Beer/Liquor, Soft Drinks. This will include ideas for branded content, events, microsites and other digital products, catered to each category. We will have the groups devote 30-45 minutes to create a list of ideas on what they will deliver to the client. Then a representative from each group will pitch the ideas to the room in the final 30 minutes of the session.

Welcome: Fran Zankowski, Colorado Springs Independent
Keynote Speakers: Gary Shapiro and Matt Taibbi
Introduction: Paula Routly, Seven Days

Consumer Electronics Association president/CEO Gary Shapiro will kick off the first full day of sessions by explaining how alt-weeklies can use "ninja innovation" to prepare for — and adapt to — industry change. No one understands the "adapt or perish" mindset better than the scrappy alt news industry, and Shapiro will explain how lessons from tae kwon do (in which he has a black belt) can help alt-weeklies harness their strengths and turn weaknesses into assets.

Lest there be any doubt that alt-weeklies are up to the challenge, Rolling Stone contributing editor Matt Taibbi will follow Shapiro's talk with a reminder that adapting and disrupting is what alts do best.

U.S. cities are shaking out into three camps these days: Many (mostly) coastal cities that are rapidly developing and pricing out the middle and working class, and other cities — many located in the Rust Belt — that are struggling to remain viable at all. Then there's a third group of mostly Sun Belt cities which are growing economically but in many ways have more in common with traditional "suburbs" in terms of their urban form than they do with what we think of as cities. The fate of an individual alt-weekly is inextricably tied to the economic health of its city. What can their divergent paths tell us about the future of the industry as a whole?

If you hear the phrase "workplace design" do you think of high rise office buildings containing cubicle farms? What if we as leaders thought about workplace design in terms of who represents our community and how they fit within the culture of our newsrooms? How would you go about finding the very people who could carry out your vision of community engagement while growing your consumer base? Join NPR and UNITY Journalists consultant Doug Mitchell who will lead the discussion.

Former 2 Live Crew frontman and current Miami New Times columnist Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell will be the featured speaker at the annual Free Speech Lunch.

2 Live Crew's double platinum album As Nasty As They Wanna Be was ruled legally obscene by a U.S. District Judge in 1990, making it illegal to sell in three South Florida counties. After performing four songs from the album in a Hollywood, Fla. nightclub, Campbell and two other band members were arrested and put on trial for violating obscenity laws. A jury acquitted the group of all charges, and two years later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit overturned the ruling which found the album obscene. "It apparently was the first time any federal appellate court had been asked to rule whether a musical composition was obscene," the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported at the time.

Campbell has been writing columns for Miami New Times since February 2010, where he shares his "crazy-ass views on current events." Jim DeFede — a reporter for CBS News in Miami and certified by New Times editor Chuck Strouse as the "most entertaining man alive" — will lead a Q&A with Campbell.

Optional event, pre-registration required.

Editors! Come shoot the bull during the Editors' Roundtable, led by Gambit editor Kevin Allman. As budgets tighten and we're expected to do more and more, alt-weekly editors are confronting many of the same challenges. How can you deliver a great paper under these circumstances without compromising your integrity or spending any more time and money — both of which are in short supply? The Editors' Roundtable will be a chance to ask questions, raise problems and see if some of your fellow editors have found useful solutions. If you attended the Editors' Roundtable in Detroit in 2012 (led by Rachael Daigle), or the digitally-focused Editors' Roundtable in San Francisco last January, this is the same format -- no speeches. We'll sit in a circle and just talk with each other. There will be treats. And Kleenex. No experts, just you and your fellow editors, sharing your hard-earned knowledge. And maybe a bit of bitching and whining.

Three writers who showed extraordinary enterprise in tracking down stories will talk about their reporting and adventures. Miami New Times editor Tim Elfrink penned stories on Biogenesis, the Coral Gables steroid clinic that allegedly provided performance-enhancing drugs to major leaguers including the Yankees Alex Rodriguez. John Maines was half of the reporting team at Fort Lauderdale's Sun-Sentinel that won this year's Public Service Pulitzer for showing that more than 800 police officers from a dozen agencies drove at average speeds of 90 to more than 120 miles per hour. They used data from highway tolls and GPS's. L.A. Weekly editor Sarah Fenske won the 2011 Livingston award for Young Journalists by revealing the housing director of Maricopa County, Ariz., was guilty of flagrant nepotism, cronyism and other corruption Her work forced his resignation and reorganization of the department.

Just a couple hundred yards from the calm Atlantic seas, you'll lounge by the pool as you sip a mojito, listen to a DJ's Latin beat and relax in the tropical breeze. Appetizers will be provided by James Beard-award-winning chef Michael Schwartz. And hell, bring your bathing suit. You might even want to take a dip.

Forget a tour of the Florida Everglades. If you really want to see Miami's natural wildlife in action, you need to take the Miami New Times stripper bar tour. You'll get to see real life Florida Panthers salivate and throw stacks of dollar bills at lithe and buxom gazelles swinging and bouncing around the pole that helps sustain Miami’s precious sex-fueled eco-system.

We'll be departing Friday night, July 12, following the party. Exact time to be determined.

First stop: Tootsie's Cabaret. The mother ship of all strip clubs in south Florida. Located inside a 74,000 square foot warehouse, Tootsie's was recently ranked the number one gentleman's establishment by Complex magazine. In addition to the main area, the grind rooms, and champagne rooms, Tootsie's also houses a sports bar, Knockers, and a scaled replica of a NYC subway car for special friction dances. If you're feeling like a baller, Tootsie's VIP lounge offers a panoramic unobstructed view of the main stage. Oh and more than 200 dancers of course.

Second stop: King of Diamonds. The spot made famous by Lil Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, and Floyd Mayweather, the KOD is Miami's hip-hop fueled pleasure palace. Founded by strip club pioneer Jack Galardi, King of Diamonds is the second largest strip club after Tootsie's, featuring a sex toy shop, a barber shop, and a hidden basketball court. Here you'll get to witness a monsoon of dollar bills raining on more than a 100 dancers who work the pole like astronauts training in zero gravity rooms.

Third and final stop: Scarlett's Cabaret in Hallandale Beach. Not as opulent or grand as Tootsie's and KOD, but a great bar to end the night. Friendly bartenders and wait staff. Strippers in LED costumes. And just a fun, laidback atmosphere.

Fine print: you're on your own for transportation, so bring cash to share taxis...and for other things that might require a supply of bills.
