DSI: Design Scene Interactive
Have you got a killer ad you want to share? Or a layout that you would like to bury? This moderated, interactive session will focus on the good, the bad and maybe even the ugly of alt-weekly design. Dig up examples of ads you hated and ads you loved; editorial art that made your day and some that ruined it; promos to die for: bring them to the seminar or send them to debra@aan.org and we’ll create a presentation to get the conversation started.
Moderators: Joe Mac Leod and Athena Towery, Baltimore City Paper
3:45 to 5 pm
Designing an Efficient Workflow
Do you spend hours checking your .pdfs for errors? Does your time in the office seem to get longer and longer each week? Do you wish that you could incorporate InCopy and InDesign, but have no clue how to begin? This interactive session will cover the major points of a production workflow, from ad prepress to page design to prepping pages for the printer. Come to this group roundtable with questions, and challenges, or share your own workflow ideas.
Moderator: Mike Kalyan, Washington City Paper
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18

(Please note: this is an all day seminar, presented in two parts.)
Breaking Through with Photoshop and Illustrator
A weekly production schedule contains barely enough time to move images, graphics, and ads through production. When is there ever time to learn the deeper secrets of software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator? To answer that question, this year the Design and Production Program takes a closer look at Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator in newspaper production, covering each product in a dedicated session. Veteran author and trainer Conrad Chavez guides each session through the phases of print and Web production. Along the way he brings to light often overlooked opportunities for higher quality, efficiency, creativity, and consistency. The sessions cover topics such as digital camera workflow, working with images and ads from various sources, preparing graphics for print and the Web, and archiving. Regardless of your skill level, you’ll pick up tips and techniques that you can use to spend less time on production and more time on design and creativity.
