Former Salt Lake City Weekly Editor Running for Officenew
Holly Mullen, who left the alt-weekly in February 2009 after nearly two years at the helm, has entered the 2010 race for the at-large Salt Lake County Council seat currently held by her step-daughter, Jenny Wilson. Appeals Court Upholds Dismissal of Suit Against Cleveland Scenenew
A three-judge panel of the federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in December upheld a U.S. District Court's 2008 dismissal of a defamation suit brought against the Scene and one of its reporters by an Ohio doctor. The circuit court found Dr. Edward Patrick failed to demonstrate the threshold requirement of falsity in regards to a 2004 article that the doctor claimed falsely suggested his resume was misleading, his medical credentials were not valid, and that his board certification process was fraudulent.

The deadline for early registration at this year's Web Publishing Conference is Monday, Jan. 11. North Coast Journal Adds Three Co-Ownersnew
"About five years ago, Carolyn [Fernandez, the paper's production manager] and I began to craft a succession plan for the newspaper," publisher Judy Hodgson writes. "What would the ownership look like when we are no longer actively working? Who will be at the helm for the next 20 years?" To answer that question, the two co-founders did not have to go far. On Jan. 1, editor Hank Sims, sales manager Mike Herring and A&E editor Bob Doran became co-owners of the Journal; they are now minority stockholders while Fernandez and Hodgson retain majority control.

The application deadline for newspapers to apply for AAN membership is Feb. 5, 2010. You can download an application here, or contact AAN to have one mailed to you. After a rigorous vetting process, the Membership Committee will issue its recommendations prior to July's convention in Toronto, where all members will have the chance to vote on the applicants. Whoops! NOW Magazine Mistakenly IDs Toronto Pol as Gaynew
In a story previewing 2010, NOW sized up city councillor Adam Giambrone's chances of becoming mayor. "He's young. He's bright. He's gay," the story read. "And he looks better than any of his challengers so far." But there was one problem, Giambrone says. "I'm not, in fact, gay," he wrote on Facebook. "Sarah, my partner, has taken the news in stride and with good humour and I'm sure I'll never hear the end of it from the LGBTQ people in my life." NOW has acknowledged the mistake and changed the phrasing to "gay-positive."

San Antonio Current Series Makes 'Best Environmental Journalism' Listnew
Greg Harman's three-part Nukes of Hazard series has made On Earth magazine's "Best Environmental Journalism of 2009" list, along with several books, a series from the New York Times and pieces from prominent national magazines like The New Yorker, Mother Jones and Vanity Fair. "Harman shows readers what's at stake in the current industry campaign to create a 'nuclear renaissance' in Texas," Osha Gray Davidson writes. "Nukes of Hazard is exactly what alternative weeklies are supposed to provide but frequently don't: a powerfully written, in-depth piece about an issue that is most important to readers -- now that they've found out about it." On Earth is published by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Alt-Weekly Food Writer's Book Makes TIME's Year-End Top 10 Listnew
Jason Sheehan's Cooking Dirty has been named one of TIME's Top 10 Nonfiction Books of 2009. "It's a paradox of the post-Bourdain era: chef memoirs are trendy, but none of the chefs writing them have the freakish combination of cooking and writing talent that made Anthony Bourdain a star," Lev Grossman writes. "But Jason Sheehan comes damn close, and he gives the genre his own distinctive seasoning." Sheehan recently made the move from Westword to the Seattle Weekly.

L.A. Weekly Hires Karina Longworth as New Film Editornew
Longworth, who is the co-founder of Cinematical.com and former editor SpoutBlog, will replace Scott Foundas, who last month announced he was leaving the Weekly to become the associate program director of The Film Society of Lincoln Center. Longworth will begin her tenure at the Weekly on Jan. 18. In other Weekly news, the paper has hired a new staff reporter: Gene Maddaus, formerly of the Daily Breeze.

Ex-Political Editor Gets Local ACLU Award for Work at Creative Loafingnew
The Pinellas County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union recently gave the Irene Miller Vigilance in Journalism award to Wayne Garcia for his work as political editor at Creative Loafing (Tampa). The chapter's board members unanimously chose Garcia, who left CL to teach at the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications this summer, for his "clear objective reporting of the actions of government," chapter president Thom Foley says. "As soon as the name was mentioned, it was like a ripple of 'Oh, that's perfect!' It was an instantaneous unanimous decision."

Web Publishing Conference Programming Shapes Up
Although we're still nailing down some final details, much of the programming for this winter's Web Conference at San Francisco's Argonaut Hotel has been finalized. From Twitter to digital display ads to iPhone apps to email newsletters, the most important digital publishing topics for AAN members will be tackled in a mix of plenary sessions and workshops during the conference, which will take place Jan. 27-29.
