Membership Committee Recommends Two Papers for Admission to AAN
Of the five newspapers that applied for AAN membership this year, the Membership Committee is recommending that two be voted into the association: See Magazine and Inland Empire Weekly. The committee is also recommending that six current members who've experienced ownership changes be reaffirmed. AAN members will vote on these applications, as well as other matters, at Saturday afternoon's Annual Meeting. In addition, the Membership Committee is recommending that AAN take a look at allowing only-online publications to join the association. UPDATE (3:17 PM EST): The membership committee's report as originally uploaded was incorrect when it said that See's owner, Great West Newspapers, was "the largest" media chain in Canada. It's a large company, but not the largest in the country. The document in the resource library has been updated with the correct information.

Maui Time Weekly Publisher: Alt-Weeklies 'Haven't Innovated' Onlinenew
In an episode of the web TV show "This Week in Startups," Tommy Russo calls in via Skype to chat with host Jason McCabe Calacanis about new media and old (his bit starts about 5 minutes into the show). "Alt-weeklies were the innovative product to the daily newspaper 40 years ago," Russo says. "What's happened is that these papers haven't innovated; they haven't changed." He says that alt-weeklies, like the rest of the newspaper industry, have been barking up the wrong 'net tree. "'How do we get our papers online?' [is] not the right question. The question is: 'How do we dominate our market with news media through this new tool?'" Russo goes on to talk about how alts are well-positioned to become more robust multimedia outlets. "The advantage a weekly paper has is that we are on the streets," he says. "A lot of these online search companies are trying to get into the trenches with us -- but we're already there, we just don't realize it."

MMC Buys Deadline Hollywood Daily, Plans Expansionnew
Mail.com Media Corporation (MMC) has purchased Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily for an undisclosed sum. The website, which grew out of Finke's "Deadline Hollywood" column in the L.A. Weekly, has earned praise and awards from colleagues and industry insiders over the past few years and reportedly receives more than 10 million monthly unique visitors. MMC says that within 90 days, Deadline Hollywood Daily "will become bicoastal with the hiring of a New York City-based senior journalist who will report to Finke." Online Publishers Association/comScore Study Looks at 'Silent Clicks'new
The study is "designed to move beyond the 'click' as a measure of online advertising success," Silicon Alley Insider reports. It assesses 80 branding campaigns across 200 websites over a month's time, analyzing consumer behaviors of users exposed to display advertising. "To date, measuring a brand campaign meant relying on the click," Online Publishers Association president Pam Horan says in a release. "In order to understand the value of the audiences that display advertising attracts, our study helps marketers think about real behavioral measures designed to move the needle."

City Pages Launches 'Twin Cities Reader'new
The Reader, named for the Twin Cities alt-weekly that closed in 1997, is a local news aggregator being developed as a separate entity from the paper's Blotter blog. "This is it's own product, and it's meant to be a hub for finding the most important stories in the Twin Cities quickly," City Pages editor Kevin Hoffman tells AAN News in an email. "Whereas Blotter is highly voice driven, this is more like a map where the reader decides where to visit." The Reader apes the look of the notorious Drudge Report, a move Hoffman says was intentional. "The Drudge Report has long been the top national aggregator online, even for people who don't agree with Drudge's politics," he says. "We think that this is the format that people are used to for aggregators, and wanted to do something similar for local news."

Report: Mobile Audience for Local Content is Upnew
comScore is reporting that the number of people who sought local information on a mobile device grew 51 percent from March 2008 to March 2009. The number of people accessing online directories has seen the greatest increase during the past year (73 percent), followed by restaurants (70 percent), maps (63 percent) and movies (60 percent).

Subpoena for Web Commenters' Info in Las Vegas is Narrowednew
"The Las Vegas U.S. attorney's office appears to have relented in its demand for the identities of all of the people who wrote comments on the Review-Journal website about a criminal tax trial in progress," the Las Vegas daily reports. The revised subpoena asks for the same information about only two comments, and the paper says it will comply. "I'd hate to be the guy who refused to tell the feds Timothy McVeigh was buying fertilizer," editor Thomas Mitchell says. Meanwhile, the ACLU of Nevada has filed its own motion to quash the subpoena and stop the release of any identities.
