Memphis Flyer is Latest Alt-Weekly to Curate LimeWire Compliationnew
The LimeWire Store has just released Ear to the Ground: Memphis, a free 14-track sampler of local bands curated by the Memphis Flyer. "We're always looking for ways to promote Memphis and its music scene," Flyer music editor Chris Herrington says in a release. "And the Ear to the Ground series, with its great track record in other cities, seemed like a terrific opportunity to do just that."

Independent Weekly's Hopscotch Festival Announces Lineupnew

Public Enemy, Broken Social Scene, Panda Bear, Fucked Up, No Age and Atlas Sound are among the big-name acts lined up for the Weekly's inaugural music festival, which will take place in Raleigh this September. The festival is being directed by Indy account executive Greg Lowenhagen and curated by music editor Grayson Currin.

Designers Turn Copies of L.A. Weekly into Dresses at L.A. Fashion Weeknew
A show called "Paper Dresses" that hit runways during the recent L.A. Fashion Week featured clothes made out of the L.A. Weekly. "It might have had a Project Runway challenge feel, but there was no denying the crafting skills, creative construction and whimsy of each and every piece on display," the Weekly's Lina Lecaro writes. "The presentation also served as a reminder of one thing print journalism will always have over web: cool, colorful cover pages."

AAN's Editor Stepping Down
Editor Jon Whiten is leaving the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies; he will be replaced by current Editorial Awards and Advertising Director Jason Zaragoza. Whiten, who joined AAN in January 2006, is stepping down to focus on the local news website and arts & culture magazine he owns and operates in Jersey City, N.J. His last day on staff is March 31, but he will continue as a part-time contractor, overseeing AAN.org, for a month or two, as Zaragoza transitions from his current position into the editor role.

Scores of alt-weekly staffers descended on San Francisco's Argonaut Hotel last week for AAN's 2010 Web Publishing Conference. Publishers, editors, ad sales managers and others came together for one-and-a-half days of virtually non-stop panels and presentations on how best to manage digital publishing now and in the future. Monterey County Weekly Raises More than $500,000 for Nonprofits
The Weekly says its five-week Community Fund campaign has raised a total of $529,337 for local nonprofits. A total of 1,609 readers donated to the campaign, in amounts ranging from 27 cents to over $50,000.
