New Times to Acquire Village Voice Medianew
The New York Times is reporting that the long-rumored deal will finally be announced on Monday. The merged company will be called Village Voice Media, and 62 percent of it will be owned by New Times' current shareholders. The Times says the merger "will undoubtedly raise questions about whether The Voice and its siblings can preserve their anti-establishment roots as part of a growing corporation." But New Times' Jim Larkin says, "I'm doing it because I love good journalism. I want to have newspapers in the most exciting markets in the country. This is not a financial play." Larkin also says he and his partners expect to buy out VVM's financial backers in five years.

AAN Makes Second Relief Payment as Gambit Fund Passes Six Figures

The association has collected over $106,000 in charitable contributions since the effort to raise money for Gambit Weekly employees was announced on Sept. 2. A second payment of $1,000 was wired yesterday to each of those employees, who were evacuated from their homes and left without jobs or income after Hurricane Katrina struck.
Most of the money raised has come from AAN-member papers and their employees, although contributions began to trickle in last week from readers as well.

OC Weekly on Its 10th: Thank You Comrades!

When OC Weekly was launched in 1995, most people figured it wouldn't last: Orange County was (they said) too decentralized, conservative and suburban for an alt-weekly. Even editor/publisher Will Swaim admits he experienced a little anxiety in those early days. Yet here the paper is 10 years later, stronger than ever, making a difference in people's lives, and providing work for its staff that is exciting, fun and rewarding. And Swaim has a few people to thank for that.

First Relief Payments Wired to Gambit Staffers
Forty-nine employees of the besieged New Orleans paper will each receive an initial gift of $1,000 this week from AAN's Gambit Relief Fund. Although the Fund has already collected over $52,000 in contributions, AAN will continue to seek additional financial assistance for Gambit staffers, with the goal of raising enough money to help them through the next two or three months. New Times and Village Voice employees, whose parent companies have both aggressively promoted a matching-funds program, make up a large percentage of the individual contributions received in the first week since the fund was announced.
