New Times Fares Well in Salute to Excellence Awardsnew

Finalists have been announced in the annual Salute to Excellence Awards sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists. More than half of the finalists named for papers with a circulation under 150,000 are from New Times papers. The Riverfront Times of St. Louis has four stories nominated, including two by staff writer Mike Seely. The Cleveland Scene boasts two finalists. Phoenix New Times, Dallas Observer and New Times Broward-Palm Beach are also represented on the short-list. Winners will be announced at the NABJ's awards banquet Oct. 9 in Washington, D.C.

Riverfront Times Hires School Board Member As Sex Columnistnew

Just in case St. Louis, Mo., residents aren't getting their full sex education in the public schools, school board member Bill Haas has started offering supplemental advice in the city's alt-weekly. His column "Bill Me!" covers such sexual topics as -- well, AAN News would like to report what the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said they were, but the paper's Jake Wagman wrote that he couldn't mention them in any but the most general terms in a family newspaper.

New Times Dominates NABJ Awardsnew

Newspapers in the Phoenix-based alt-weekly chain picked up seven of the 11 awards handed out last month in the under 150,000 circulation category of the National Association of Black Journalists' annual contest. Dallas Observer's Jim Schutze and Julie Lyons, Cleveland Scene's Thomas Francis and Riverfront Times' Jeannette Batz all were named first-place winners.

AAN Papers Take Four Firsts in Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awardsnew

Dallas Observer won two first place awards in the 2003 Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards, and The Village Voice and Phoenix New Times each took one. East Bay Express won second place in the General Excellence category for papers with circulations 50,001 to 100,000, and New Times papers were finalists in nine other categories.

New Times writers swept the Newspaper Restaurant Review or Critique category of the 2003 James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards with Jason Sheehan of Westword winning, while Jill Posey-Smith of Riverfront Times and Robb Walsh of Houston Press were finalists. Mark Stuertz of the Dallas Observer was the winner in the Newspaper, Magazine or Internet Reporting on Consumer Issues, Nutrition and/or Health category for his article “Green Giant." Dara Moskowitz, City Pages (Twin Cities) and Walsh were finalists in the newspaper series category.

Finkel Heading to St. Louisnew

Tom Finkel, editor of City Pages (Twin Cities) until mid-2002, returns to his hometown of St. Louis and to New Times as the new editor of Riverfront Times. He replaces Jim Nesbitt. Before taking the position to Minneapolis, Finkel was managing editor of Miami New Times. "I'm thrilled to be able to move back to my hometown and be a part of the Riverfront Times," Finkel says. He starts March 3.

After only a year on the job, Jim Nesbitt steps down as editor of Riverfront Times, the St. Louis Business Journal reports. The business journal also reports other changes in staffing at the New Times paper in St. Louis, including canceling the column "Short Cuts" and making Associate Editor Randall Roberts a staff writer.

Hartmann Hangs It Upnew

"I think we've all had enough of me," Riverfront Times founder Ray Hartmann says as he bids adieu to the paper after 25 years and one million words. "Through the years, we have fought a lot of fights, told a lot of stories. We challenged the elitist, closed Father-knows-best decision-making process of Civic Progress," Hartmann writes in his valedictory column. "We challenged their siphoning of millions of dollars in tourism funds to something called the VP Fair. There were environmental issues, race issues, social issues. Most recently, there was a five-year battle against the late, great stadium scam, arguably my favorite issue ever." Hartmann says the RFT flourished because it reflected "the real St. Louis."

Stocker New Publisher at Riverfront Times

Ken Stocker comes from Denver's Westword to the Riverfront Times, on a mission to raise public awareness of the alt-weekly and thereby boost sales. The 12-year New Times veteran has a green sales staff, but he's convinced the paper is "poised and ready to make a big push." Julie Lobbia: A Heart as Big as New Yorknew

Julie Lobbia, a writer for The Village Voice, died of ovarian cancer Thanksgiving Day. She also worked for Riverfront Times, rising to managing editor there before going to the Voice. The diminuitive columnist, who routinely biked 100 miles a week, crusaded to save the city's rent laws, which she maintained preserve New York's rich diversity. "Injustice set her on fire," says Voice Editor in Chief Don Forst, calling her "a giant unyielding in her pursuit of the truth."

New Ashcroft v. Old Ashcroftnew

Attorney General John Ashcroft now demands the very federal powers he opposed as a Missouri senator, Ray Hartmann points out in the Riverfront Times. "As for today's Ashcroft, whatever happened to the Fourth Amendment and the 'indivisible American value' it contains? To borrow a phrase (his), 'apparently innocent citizens are expected to trust the bureaucracy not to abuse them.'" For Ashcroft, that was then, Hartmann writes.
